Acupuncture treatment
is a therapy in which fine needles are inserted into specific
points in the body. It may be used to relieve symptoms from
detected trigger points and this may be combined with the
use of traditional points aimed at restoring the balance of
energies in the body.
Acupuncture stimulates
nerves in skin and muscle; it can increase endorphin and serotonin
in pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This
modifies the way pain signals are received. An improved sense
of well-being may be noted after treatment.
Research has shown
that acupuncture can affect most of the body’s systems-
the nervous system, muscle tone, hormone output, circulation,
antibody production and allergic responses, as well as the
respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

Often people feel relaxed
and calm. A few, who are strong responders, may feel light-headed
and drowsy for anything up to a few hours.
Sometimes
people describe a sensation of tingling, dullness or heaviness
whilst the needles are inserted. Momentary discomfort can
be experienced when the needles are inserted. It
does not often cure a disorder but can relieve the symptoms
for long periods of time. After the initial course of treatment
, booster sessions might be required months apart.
Length of treatment
- The length of treatment depends on the condition,
the severity, and the duration of the condition. Often three
to six sessions are sufficient.
